OWL also can be the acronym for Ontology Web Language which is one of the most exciting researches going on in Computer Science. If it goes well, very soon we will have Web 3.0, which compared to Web 2.0 (which allowed users to interact directly with the content -> blogs, social networks, interaction) will have all of this plus the semantic context of information. when you search for jose socrates on google (or another search engine) it will no longer search "jose+socrates" and return all the jose's and socrate's in the world, but it will contextualize and know that jose socrates is the prime-minister of portugal. SUPER!
